Village bench replacement

You probably saw that a delivery driver demolished the bench by the bus stop on Church Street, we were able to claim on insurance for a replacement seat. As a council we were already discussing replacing all the old benches in the village, with a view to upgrading them with similar to those seen around Scarthingwell and Saxton. We have chosen to situate the first bench by the flower beds on Main Street. We selected this location as hard standing was already available, but also because it is set a decent distance from the road.

We are considering where other seats could be located and would welcome input from villagers. The bus stop seat was close to the road, and if anyone had been sat there at the time of the accident would highly likely have been injured, we would welcome views on whether the seat needs replacing in that location, or whether people would prefer us to stick to sites set back from the road.Have your say via the contact form on this website or by contacting the Clerk by emailing clerk@barkstonashparishcouncil.gov.uk.

Coming Soon...

We are currently working with a company called Swarco to install two new vehicle activated speed signs, one to replace the broken sign on London Road as you travel towards Tadcaster and one as you approach the village on Common Road from Church Fenton. More details on what the signs give us will be posted here once details are firmed up.

Highway Maintenance

We would encourage villagers to report any issues they spot with road markings and furniture to North Yorkshire Council(NYC). We recently flagged that the Barkston Ash sign on the right hand side of the road as you approach the village from Sherburn, between the railway bridge and Kids Planet. Half of the metal sign was in danger of being ripped off by the wind, this could have caused significant damage and injury. NYC responded immediately and the sign has been fully secured. Please see the Useful Contacts page of this website for a direct link to the North Yorkshire Roads and Pavements section of the NYC website.

Let's Talk North Yorkshire!

In autumn 2022 North Yorkshire Council launched Let’s Talk North Yorkshire. It is the biggest ever countywide conversation to understand how residents feel about their local area and their priorities, as well as the impact the cost-of-living crisis is having on lives.

The information is being used to inform the new council’s decisions, policies and services going forward.

North Yorkshire is the geographically largest council in England, with a mix of rural, urban and coastal communities, all of which have common challenges but also competing and differing needs. Therefore, a strong community voice is essential. Let’s Talk North Yorkshire is one way we are using to empower that voice and is a clear commitment to listening to you.

Join in the discussions to ensure Barkston Ash is heard or just keep up to date with the latest results by following this link.

Keep Barkston Ash Tidy

Plans to install additional Litter and Dog bins along London Road adjacent to the footpath to Sherburn in Elmet have been rejected by North Yorkshire due to the 60 mph limit on the road creating a potential issue for the collection services.

Please be aware the Parish Council do have litter picking equipment available for parishioners to borrow; however we must point out that this is at our own risk as we are unable to provide insurance for individuals.
